2017-12-25From some research, the mill scale on mild steel is just part of the manufacturing process, when the steel is hotrolled into a plate, the mill scale forms on the exterior surfaces of the steel as the steel cools down from the processes of working the plate, and eventually forms a layer of hard material harder than the center of the steel.
2014-1-19Anybody wonder how the vinegar works to remove the scale It is a process called pickeling. When the mild acid in the vinegar reacts with the steel under the scale it disolves the steel a little, and in the reaction hydrogen gas is evolved. The gas bubbles Pop off the loosened scale.

I find that using abrasive wheels or discs on hot rolled steel to remove the mill scale does not work very well. The wheels or discs seem to clog up and glaze up and skip right over the scale. However, I have found that if A cheap segmented diamond Masonary wheel running at a relatively slow 2500 rpm the diamond wheel gets right underneath the scale and knocks it off.It works very fast and easy.
